Matariki

This week Kaniere School  are celebrating Matariki which runs from June 19th until July 11th, it is a star cluster of seven sisters that can be see in the early hours of the moring before the sun come up. Some people think it means they're having good crops this year, or a good year. On Friday Kaniere School is celebrating, and we get free sausages if we have our Harakiki baskets, and parents are allowed to have a free one even without a basket. We have little plates and baskets to hold the sausage's in. This one is mine. I really like how it came out. First, we got 2 long pieces of flax (Harakeke), then we cut the core off the species of flax. Then split it in half by putting our thumb through and then sliding down that makes it into 2 pieces. Then we have to try and get 12 on each flax. after that we have to weave a mat 7 pieces on the bottom then 5 on the top. We weave them into a mat then do the handle. After we did the handle we started on the sides, I Gathered one side together then tied it together with strong thin piece of the flax, and the same to the other side. Then I have made a Harakeke basket. Kereru is going to teach the little ones how to do this.  Have you ever made anything using Harakeke?
